There are days when everyone seems to be planning to go to the coast of The Hague. Like last June, during the weekend before Whitsun. The annual\u00a0sailing match\u00a0that was held at the coast, in combination with fantastic weather forecasts, provided me with a tsunami of reservation requests.
\nTelephone: \u201cYou speak English?\u201d
\n\u201cYes I do.\u201d
\n\u201cYou have room?\u201d
\n\u201cWhich date?\u201d
\n\u201cToday.\u201d
\n\u201cUnfortunately not.\u201d
\nSilence. \u201cNo room?!\u201d
\n\u201cNo room.\u201d
\n\u201cWe are at the door.\u201d
\nI look outside and to my astonishment I see a young, Asian-looking couple standing in front of the door. When I open the door, they bow and look at me with expectant, small eyes. I hear myself say \u2013 a little too quickly- that I will see if I can help them.
\nShortly after that: Telephone! \u201cHaben sie noch ein Zimmer f\u00fcr dieses wochenende?\u201d \u201cLeider nicht.\u201d On Bedandbreakfast.eu<\/a>\u00a0I quickly look for other B&B\u2019s in The Hague. Desperate, I start to call colleagues. Meanwhile, the phone keeps ringing. \u201cElsbeth speaking, if we book now, do we get a last-minute discount?\u201d \u201cIna, it\u2019s Arthur, I\u2019ve got a double booking, do you have any rooms left? \u201c In short, I explain my own unfortunate situation to him, after which he glooms that we are both \u201cin serious trouble\u201d.
\nAt that moment, my two friends walk in with their little dog Tino. \u201cYou haven\u2019t forgotten that you were supposed to watch him this weekend have you?\u201d I am not proud of what I do next, but I\u2019m close to despair. I explain my situation to my friends and they reluctantly agree to accommodate the Japanese couple in their apartment.
\nOn Monday, the couple arrives at my door again. \u201cRoom was nice. We take picture!\u201d I pose, tired. Meanwhile I think to myself that after seeing that photo, the home front in Japan will come to the conclusion that Europeans have really small eyes as well.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
